Authorities said a single-vehicle crash Wednesday morning in Centreville claimed the life of an area man.
Leon White, 30, of Belleville, was killed in the wreck, which occurred early Wednesday morning, Centreville Police Chief Steven Brown told local media outlets. No other injuries were announced by authorities.
Brown said White was driving a pickup truck on Bond Avenue at 4:45 a.m. Wednesday. He apparently lost control of the vehicle in the 6300 block of the residential street, investigators determined.
The vehicle crashed into a utility pole and then hit a tree, ripping its roots from the ground, according to local authorities. The vehicle ultimately came to rest up against the tree.
The St. Clair County Coroner’s Office pronounced White dead shortly after the crash.
The accident scene was discovered by a city police officer who was on his regular patrol route when he encountered debris in the road. The officer reportedly found the wreckage of the truck with White nearby.
It wasn’t immediately clear what led to the crash. Speed might have been a factor, Brown told local media outlets.
