A woman was killed in an accident that took place on Thursday, April 9 in the Sangamon County. The accident involved three vehicles including a USPS truck, a passenger vehicle and a pickup truck. A car accident lawyer may be able to help the family of the unfortunate victim seek compensatory damages.
The crash happened on the Illinois 104, close to the Purdom Road. According to the details shared by the Illinois State Police, the vehicles involved in the crash were identified as a 2016 GMC pickup truck, a 2010 Buick and a USPS mail truck. The pickup truck was pulling a trailer at the time which contained two anhydrous tanks.
All the three vehicles which were involved in the truck accident were traveling in the westbound lanes of I-104 at the time. The USPS mail truck was traveling right in front of the 2016 GMC pickup truck. As the USPS truck drew close to the Purdom Road, the driver reduced speed in order to turn onto the Purdom Road. This is when the pickup truck failed to reduce speed in time, colliding into the mail truck.
The driver of the pickup truck then swerved away from the mail truck to reduce the impact of the collision. The pickup truck briefly ended up in the eastbound lanes. However, when the truck driver observed the oncoming traffic in the eastbound lanes, he swerved back into the westbound lanes.
The rapid movement caused the trailer behind the truck to overturn on its side. The trailer ended up falling on the 2010 Buick which was also westbound on I-40 at the time.
The driver of the 2010 Buick was identified as Sandra S. Laurent, 77. Laurent sustained critical injuries in the incident. Once authorities arrived on the incident site, Sangamon County Coroner pronounced Laurent dead at the scene.
Investigations into the incident are still ongoing. It remains to be seen which of the two truck drivers was negligent, contributing to the accident. If police reports identify a clearly negligent party, it may be possible for the family of Sandra S. Laurent to seek compensatory damages. A car accident lawyer in Illinois can help the family in this regard.
