Authorities have identified the bicyclist killed Sunday afternoon when he was struck by a pickup truck in Kent County.
Marc A. Vanotteren, 37, of Lowell, died as a result of injuries sustained in the collision, according to car accident reports. No other injuries were reported in connection to the incident, according to the Kent County Sheriff’s Department.
Authorities said Vanotteren was riding his bike on 5 Mile Road near Murray Lake Avenue at about 3 p.m. Sunday when he was struck from behind by a pickup truck pulling a trailer. Authorities identified the truck’s driver only as a 36-year-old Lowell man.
Emergency medical responders arrived, but Vanotteren’s wounds proved fatal, according to car accident reports. Authorities did not say whether the truck’s driver was injured in the crash.
The incident remains under investigation. However, authorities said in car accident reports that they do not believe alcohol or drug intoxicants contributed to the crash.
No citations or charges have been issued in connection to the wreck, according to reports available Thursday evening. Additional details likely will be released in forthcoming car accident reports issued by the Kent County Sheriff’s Department.
The League of Michigan Bicyclists, a nonprofit organization that advocates for bicyclist safety on state roadways, issued a statement expressing grief or Vanotteren’s death.
“Our hearts go out to the family and friends of Marc Allen Vanotteren, who was struck and killed by a driver on Sunday,” nonprofit officials wrote in a Facebook post. “Rest in peace.”
A person who claimed to be Vanotteren’s cousin also offered condolences via Facebook.
“He was a gentle giant, an extremely kind sole and a fantastic person,” the cousin wrote. “He will be sorely and forever missed.”
