Flag Lowered to Honor Fallen Firefighter Benjamin Lauren

On the orders of the Governor Gretchen Whitmer, U.S. and state flags were to be flown at half-mast to honor a fallen firefighter. The order from the Governor was issued on Saturday, March 21, honoring the services of Benjamin ‘Ben’ Lauren. Governor Whitmer also issued a statement, regretting the tragic loss of the firefighter and remembering his selfless sacrifice in the line of duty.

Lauren was a firefighter at Forsyth Township who recently lost his life in the line of duty while tackling fire at a duplex. The incident took place on Friday, March 13. Lauren was part of the team of firefighters responding to a fire incident at a residence at the former K. I. Sawyer Air Force Base. The authorities were notified of the fire late at night on Friday. While two children and their mother were able to escape the fire unharmed, Lauren lost his life trying to carry out the rescue activities.

Lauren’s brother and sister are also a part of the Forsyth Township Fire Department. Lauren was among the township’s most promising firefighters, having earned the Fireman of the Year award back in 2018. He previously earned a Bachelor of Mechanical Engineering Technology in 2018 from the Northern Michigan University.

The government facilities through the state will keep flags at half-masts to honor the fallen firefighter. Others, such as homeowners, businesses and organizations across Michigan are also encouraged to follow suit. The flags will return to full-staff a day later on Sunday, March 22.
