Mary Lackamp, 89, of Berkeley died on Monday from critical injuries sustained in a crash that took place on Friday. The accident happened as Harris Howard, 26, attempted to escape a pursuit by the police.
Howard was traveling close to the West End on the 8 Mile Road at the time. He was overspeeding, so a Ferndale police officer tried to stop him. Howard initially turned on the flashers, giving the impression that he was about to stop. However, he then sped and fled from the scene, leading to a fairly brief police pursuit.
The pursuit quickly came to an end as Howard crashed into another vehicle in Royal Oak Township after running a red light. The vehicle Howard stuck was traveling north on the 8 Mile Road. Three elderly citizens were traveling in the other vehicle at the time, one of them Mark Lackamp. The sheer impact of the collision severely damaged the other vehicle and critically injured two of the elderly passengers. Of these two, Lackamp passed away on Monday morning while the other passenger is still in the hospital.
Howard also had another passenger in his car at the time of the crash. This passenger has been identified as an Iowa woman, 26 and had to be hospitalized after sustaining serious injuries.
In the wake of the crash, Howard attempted to escape on foot but was apprehended by a Michigan State Police officer. A number of charges have been brought up against him including fleeing and eluding.
