Robert Johnston Dies in Crash While Leading His Horse Home

In a road accident that took place on Sunday, February 16, Robert Johnston of Stanwood and his horse were killed. Johnston was leading his horse home after it had been found and captured by a state police trooper. The trooper also sustained injuries in the crash.

On Sunday morning, the trooper was alerted about a horse that was loose on the 8th Mile Road and 170th Avenue. Responding to this report, the trooper went in pursuit of the horse and was able to capture it. Johnston, who owned the horse, was informed about it and reached the scene to take the horse home. It was at this time that the crash happened.

A vehicle crossed the center line and then crashed into Johnston, his horse and the patrol vehicle. Johnston and his horse sustained serious injuries in the crash. Both died at the scene of the accident. The patrol vehicle was also damaged and the trooper inside the vehicle sustained minor injuries. The 43-year-old Mount Pleasant woman who was driving the other vehicle that caused the accident remained unharmed.

The accident took place at around 9:40 a.m. in the Austin Township locality of Mecosta County. Michigan State Police, Mecosta firefighters as well as deputies with the Mecosta County Sheriff’s Office responded to the incident. Authorities continue to investigate the accident and determine the factors that caused it. The identities of the woman who crashed the vehicle and the trooper who was injured have not been released so far. It remains to be seen if any charges will be brought up against the woman.
