A woman identified as Shirley Gotfryd, 85, died in Bay County, Michigan, after her husband crashed their SUV while rushing her to the hospital. Accident reports state that the accident happened at about 12:45 p.m. on Tuesday, May 5.
Deputies from the Bay County Sheriff’s Department rushed to the crash scene close to the intersection of North Euclid Avenue and Mosher Street in Bangor Township.
Before their arrival, they had received information that officers from Bay City Public Safety responded to a call of an unresponsive woman inside a vehicle in the parking lot of Auburn Physical Therapy at 309 South Euclid Avenue.
Police reports revealed that the SUV in the parking lot, a Saturn Vue, was involved in a car crash with a Chevrolet Cruze. The driver of the Cruze, a 32-year-old woman, revealed to deputies that the SUV collided with her vehicle before continuing. She also complained of a shoulder injury, after which officials took her to the McLaren Bay Region Hospital for treatment.
The driver of the Vue was identified as an 86-year-old man trying to get his wife, Shirley, to the hospital as fast as possible. Sheriff Troy R. Cunningham said that from investigations carried out, the elderly man collided with the Chevrolet Cruze but left the scene because he was in a hurry to get his wife to a medical facility after she suffered a severe health issue at home.
First responders who arrived at the scene pronounced Shirley dead; she didn’t die from injuries sustained in the accident but from her initial medical issues. Accident reports state that her husband, who was at fault for the accident, wasn’t given a citation at the scene of the crash.
The crash remains under investigation by the police. Once completed, the reports would be sent to the Bay County Prosecutor’s Office for review.
