Officers with the Las Vegas Metropolitan Police Department have arrested a suspected hit-and-run driver.
Accident reports say 19-year-old Brandon Christopher Lopes of Vallejo, California was held following a crash that resulted in the death of a pedestrian on Friday night.
The accident occurred in central Las Vegas in the area of Maryland Parkway and Twain Avenue around 9:20 p.m. The victim was a 63-year-old man whose identity hasn’t been released.
Lopes was charged with DUI resulting in death, possession of a gun by a prohibited person, failure to stop at the scene of an accident, and possession of stolen property worth over $3, 500.
He was also held on an out-of-state fugitive warrant.
Metro police said the victim was crossing Maryland Parkway when Lopes hit him with a 2003 Ford Escape.
Lopes lost control of his vehicle and struck a curb.
He was carrying three female passengers whom the authorities are also trying to locate.
Meanwhile police said the other vehicle ran over the victim while he was on the ground and dragged him along the road without stopping.
Lopes was quickly apprehended by officers.
However, police are trying to identify and locate the other driver. The make and model of the vehicle were unknown.
The victim’s death was the 37th traffic fatality in Las Vegas for the year so far, based on official accident reports.
His family may have grounds to file a wrongful death lawsuit.
