Las Vegas police have revealed the name of a man was hit by two cars in a hit-and-run accident in the east valley last Friday night.
He is 66-year-old James Taite, a resident of the city.
Previous accident reports indicated that Brandon Lopes had been arrested in connection with a fatal DUI crash but the victim’s name had not been released.
The accident occurred at 9:22 p.m. as Taite crossed Maryland Parkway close to Twain Avenue.
Police said he was not using a marked crosswalk when a 2003 Ford Escape struck him.
Another car then hit him and dragged him before fleeing the scene.
The 19-year-old Lopes of Vallejo, California was the driver of the Ford.
Newly released information indicates that Lopes tried to run after a gunshot emanated from his car. However, he was quickly caught by officers and he had a gunshot wound to his leg.
His arrest report said an open bottle of tequila was located on the floor of the vehicle behind the passenger seat.
Lopes was charged with driving under the influence resulting in death, possession of stolen property, failing to stop at the scene of a crash, and being a prohibited person in possession of a gun.
Shortly after the crash, police said they were working to find the driver of the second vehicle. They have not indicated in the most recent accident reports that they have found the person.
Taite was the 37th traffic-related fatality in the Las Vegas Metropolitan Police Department’s jurisdiction for 2020.
