Police in Las Vegas have arrested a driver who they say drove away from a crash that killed a 15-year-old pedestrian in east Las Vegas on Monday night.
Thirty-four-year-old Las Vegas woman Crystal N. Helm was booked into the Clark County Detention Center. She is suspected of failing to stop at the scene of an accident and failing to yield due care to a pedestrian.
The 15-year-old male victim has not been named.
However, police said the accident occurred as the boy was crossing East Tropicana Avenue around 8:24 p.m. He was in a marked crosswalk at South Morris Street to the east of Nellis Boulevard when he was struck by a 2002 Acura MDX.
He sustained serious injuries. The driver drove off and didn’t call the police.
An ambulance happened to be in the area and the team onboard saw the crash. The victim was taken to Sunrise Hospital and Medical Center where he subsequently passed away.
Police said an eyewitness reported that the motorist was driving a red sports utility vehicle.
Police had originally been told the vehicle was a red or orange SUV which may have been a Chevy Tahoe.
However, officers said they located the Acura later and Helm surrendered to them.
The Las Vegas Metropolitan Police Department will continue to investigate the crash.
The teenager’s death was the 32nd traffic-related fatality in the department’s jurisdiction for the year so far.
It was one of two fatal accidents that occurred on Monday night. Subsequent accident reports are expected to provide more details on the crashes and the victims.
The families may seek help from a car injury lawyer.
