A 22-year-old man was killed in a crash on Interstate Highway 35 in Austin on Saturday night, accident reports state.
On Tuesday, the Austin Police Department revealed that the victim was Aaron Franco.
He died at the scene after his Jeep Cherokee left the road for reasons yet to be determined.
The vehicle traveled about a quarter of a mile through a grassy median and then hit the concrete base of a streetlight tower.
The crash occurred around 10:40 p.m. at 12300 South I-35 which is to the north of Buda.
No one else was involved or injured in the collision.
Police have appealed for anyone with information about the accident to submit tips.
This was the city’s 31st fatal crash of 2020. Thirty-three people have lost their lives for the year so far. At this point last year, there were 25 traffic fatalities.
Even though there have been fewer cars on the road in recent weeks because of the stay-at-home order, serious crashes have remained a concern in Texas.
When the state-wide order was lifted on Friday, there was a significant increase in traffic.
Over in Harris County, Chief of Vehicular Crimes with the District Attorney’s Office, Sean Teare, reported a tragic 24 hours involving multiple accident reports.
He said between Sunday and Monday, five people were killed and three of the crashes involved alcohol or drugs.
He expressed concern about when the bars reopen, predicting that people would try to make up for lost time and cause a spike in road deaths.
The authorities in Austin are hoping to extend the local order that expires on May 8.
