A young man is dead, and the driver of an 18-wheeler has been hospitalized following a two-vehicle crash that occurred last Monday evening.

According to accident reports, the deceased is 22-year-old James Price, Jr., of Jasper. Jasper County Precinct 2 Justice of the Peace Jimmy Miller pronounced him dead at the scene.

The collision happened just before 7 p.m. on Highway 190 near the entrance to the Inman Addition. It left debris and fuel on the roadway for hundreds of feet.

The crash involved Price’s late model Dodge Ram 1500 pickup truck and an unloaded 18-wheeler chip truck driven by 62-year-old Mario Serranno of Lufkin.

Price’s vehicle was pulling a horse trailer with a horse.

Serranno was taken to Jasper Memorial Hospital by ambulance and then flown to a hospital in Beaumont.

The horse suffered serious cuts and bruises and it was taken to a neighbor’s yard before it was taken by Jasper Animal Control.

Jasper County Deputy Kent “Slim” Martindale said the animal didn’t suffer any broken bones and was expected to make a full recovery.

No information was released about how the accident occurred. The 18-wheeler was heading east but isn’t clear which direction the pickup truck was traveling.

The Texas Department of Transportation was on the scene well into the night cleaning up a massive diesel spill from the 18-wheeler.

If more information is released by the authorities about the truck crash, the details will be provided in subsequent accident reports.
