Wednesday, February 19th, saw Midlothian City Council Member, Art Pierard, lose his life in a vehicle-versus-pedestrian accident. The accident occurred in Texas, at about 10:30 p.m. near South US Highway 77 on North Interstate 35 East.
The Waxahachie Police Department got a 911 call from witnesses about the crash. When they got to the scene, they found a Ford Mustang in the median facing south.
Not too far away was an 18-wheeler semi sitting in the northbound exit, trapped in mud. The investigation by police uncovered that Pierard got out of his car after it got stuck in the median.
He was standing beside the Ford when the 18-wheeler driven by an unnamed driver went off its lane and hit the deceased. Witnesses rushed to help the councilman, but there was nothing they could do for him.
Pierard succumbed to his injuries and died without making it to the hospital. He was an active member of his community and had served in the city council since 2018.
An investigation into the crash is still ongoing. However, there’s no report that the driver of the semi suffered any injury, and police have not uncovered what made him veer off his lane.
Accidents in Texas are a daily occurrence with a lot of fatalities. According to the Texas Department of Transportation, one person is injured in a traffic accident every two minutes and seven seconds.
There is one death every two hours and twenty minutes, with a total of about 3, 642 deaths in a year. To reduce the death rate, authorities have advised drivers to follow traffic rules and signs, and drive with the utmost care.
