Authorities Name Lee Martin Cagle as Pedestrian Fatally Struck in Austin

Three months after a 55-year-old pedestrian met his end in a tragic traffic collision that left his body mangled, authorities have identified him. The Austin Police Department, in updated accident reports released on Tuesday, May 12, named the deceased man as 55-year-old Lee Martin Cagle.

The incident took place just before 10:30 p.m. on Saturday, February 15 in Austin, Texas. Passersby who called in the crash recounted that the suspect was driving at a high rate of speed, without his headlights on when he encountered the pedestrian.

Preliminary reports showed the man, later identified as Paul Joseph Garcia, was behind the wheels of a 2014 Ford Focus. Upon approaching Slaughter Lane, he ran over the pedestrian, who at the time, was pushing a shopping cart, and continued on his way without stopping.

Cagle’s body went through the windshield of the Ford and settled on the front passenger’s seat. Police said the corpse was mangled up, with some body extremities detached and deposited on the roadway. The driver forged ahead until he pulled over in front of a beer garden located half a mile from the accident scene.

Witnesses told officers that Garcia alighted his vehicle barefoot, and calmly strolled into the beer garden, leaving the mangled corpse in his car. When deputies apprehended the driver, they discovered the victim’s blood on him, confirmed by a DNA match. The man was intoxicated at the time.

Detectives believe Garcia was impaired before the accident, as no one at the beer garden served him drinks before law enforcement arrived.

The accident reports asserted that the Texas Alcoholic Beverage Commission (TABC) is still investigating to determine the source of alcohol that left Garcia intoxicated.
