Beaumont Bicycle Accident Victim Identified as Jerry Brachett

Jerry Brachett

Beaumont Police are currently investigating an accident that occurred on February 14.

The accident happened at the 2500 block of College Street near Debb’s Liquor Store at Avenue G.

Jerry Brachett, a 36-year-old from Beaumont, was riding their bicycle at 2:15 a.m. on College Street. He had positioned himself in the far right lane going east. A silver Hyundai Accent, traveling the same direction, hit the bicyclist from behind.

A deputy from the Jefferson County Sheriff’s Department was in the area at the time of the accident. The deputy tried to perform life-saving measures on Brachett. The deputy continued to do this until the paramedics were on the scene.

When the Beaumont EMS arrived at the scene they pronounced Brachett dead.

Nothing has indicated in reports that Brachett was wearing a helmet at the time of the accident. There is also nothing saying he was using proper lighting on the bicycle for night riding.

Texas state law does not make bicyclists wear a helmet unless they are under the age of 18. The laws changed in June 2014. The prior law stated that all riders must wear a helmet on a bicycle.

This is an ongoing investigation. There is no mention of the driver in the Hyundai Accent or if they will be facing charges.

It is also unclear if drugs and/or alcohol had any impact on the accident.

There have been no charges filed at the present time. Updates to be provided once the investigation is complete.
