A rollover crash on Monday, February 24, in Corpus Christi has left two children without their mother. 20-year-old Brianna Cruz was driving with her two children and an unidentified 20-year-old male when she lost control of her vehicle.
Cruz was driving on the Crosstown Expressway near Horne Road in her SUV around 11:00 p.m. on Monday evening.
A witness to the accident, Stephanie Gonzalez, was on her way to work when she and a coworker saw the wreck occur in front of them.
Gonzalez stated that they could hear the tires spinning on the pavement. The SUV was weaving and swerving back and forth from the left to the middle lanes. She released her gas to slow down right as the SUV plummeted over the guardrail.
The SUV went over the guardrail and landed on its top in an embankment near Horne.
Several people began helping the people in the vehicle. Gonzalez and her coworker dialed 9-1-1. She described the scene when she got to the driver’s side of the vehicle. She said there was so much blood and she knew there was no helping her.
Cruz was pronounced dead at the scene of the accident. The male passenger and her two children were pulled from the wreckage. Emergency services took them to nearby hospitals.
The family confirmed that the children were taken to Driscoll Children’s Hospital. One of them was in fair condition and the other in critical condition. The family did say that all three were expected to live despite the injuries sustained in the accident.
Police still have not confirmed a reason why the SUV went over the guardrail.
If you drive by the scene where the accident occurred, the guardrail still shows the remembrance of the young mother who lost her life in the accident.
