Diego Hernandez Killed, Infant Injured in Highway Crash

An 18-year-old has died from injuries sustained in a car accident on Wednesday evening.

According to information from the Texas Department of Public Safety (DPS), five other people were injured in the crash, including an infant.

The deceased has been identified as 18-year-old Diego Hernandez.

The two-vehicle crash took place at the intersection of U.S. Highway 83/277 and Farm to Market Road 3034 (Beltway North), a little before 5:30 p.m. The area is just within the southern border of Jones County.

DPS said one vehicle was going west on FM 3034. The driver failed to stop at a stop sign and tried to cross US83. The vehicle was struck on the passenger side by another car. Diego Hernandez was a passenger in the car that ran the red light.

A one-year-old boy was seriously injured. He was given CPR by an off-duty-trooper who arrived on the scene first. The baby was airlifted to Cook Children’s Hospital in Fort Worth and is expected to survive.

Officials did not say which vehicle the infant was in but they revealed that he was not properly restrained. The authorities also did not identify the other injured people or indicate which vehicles they were traveling in.

It is not known if anyone will face charges in connection with the incident. More details will be provided if they become available.

Abilene police and firefighters also responded to the scene and the crash remains under investigation. Investigators will determine whether speed or intoxicants played a role in the accident.
