Donald Long Dead After Car Goes Airborne and Crashes into Tree

A man lost his life on Saturday in a single-car crash in Van Zandt County, Texas.

According to the Texas Department of Public Safety, 29-year-old Donald Long’s Hyundai Sonata left the roadway and struck a tree.

The accident happened on SH-198, about four miles to the northeast of Canton. Troopers responded just after 6 a.m.

Preliminary reports suggest that Donald Long was heading northeast in his car when he left the roadway after he approached a curve.

The Sonata traveled alongside a ditch then struck a driveway before going airborne. The car then hit a fencepost and stopped after it hit a tree.

Long was pronounced dead at the scene. No one else was injured in the accident.

It is not clear why Long’s vehicle left the roadway, but the crash remains under investigation. More details will be released if they become available.

In 2018, Texas recorded a road fatality rate of 1.29 deaths per hundred million vehicle miles traveled.  One person died every 2 hours 25 minutes.

Single-vehicle accidents in which the vehicle ran off the road caused 1,289 deaths. These accounted for 35.42 percent of all road traffic deaths that year.

Single-car crashes are usually due to driver error. Common factors include driver fatigue, excessive speed, and impairment by drugs or alcohol.

However, environmental and roadway factors like sharp curves, inclement weather, and narrow lanes can also play a role. Vehicle defects can also lead to crashes.
