One person died, and another survived with injuries following an early Friday morning, June 19th, accident in Jefferson County, Texas. The Texas Department of Public Safety disclosed the fatal victim’s name as Ricky Stone, 39, of Hamshire.
The car accident report revealed that the collision happened at approximately 10 a.m. on State Highway 73 near Taylor’s Bayou. The DPS said that the preliminary investigation uncovered that a dump truck driven by Dwayne Benoit, 51, of Orange was traveling east on the highway inside the traffic lane.
At the same time, a 2008 Chevrolet pickup truck, driven by Stone, was coming behind the dump truck. Benoit slowed to make a left turn into the crossover, and the victim’s car rear-ended him. Both vehicles traveled for a short distance before coming to rest.
Stone passed away at the scene, and the Justice of the Peace, Tom Gillam pronounced him dead. The dump truck driver suffered extensive injuries, and the paramedics took him to the Medical Center of Southeast Texas for treatment.
The DPS closed all the eastbound traffic lanes for about three hours and reopened it after collecting evidence and clearing the scene. The investigation into the accident is ongoing, and there’s no additional information.
Rear-ended collisions are one of the leading causes of crash-related deaths, and those who survive usually suffer severe wounds. To prevent it, drivers should maintain adequate distance when on the road, and drive within the speed limit to enable them to apply brakes in time to avoid a collision.
