Hit-and-Run Accident Ends Marisa Moura-Srivatava’s Life in Chicago

Matthew Strudwick

A hit-and-run driver struck and killed a woman early Friday morning, June 19th, on the Edens Expressway of Chicago, Illinois. The Cook County Medical Examiner’s Office identified the victim as Marisa Guiliana Moura-Srivatava of Hinsdale.

According to the accident report, the Illinois State Police found the woman along the southbound lanes of the expressway near Old Orchard Road around midnight. A passing vehicle struck Moura-Srivastava, but the car and the driver were long gone when officers arrived at the scene.

At this time, it is unclear what the woman was doing on the roadway. The ISP said that her family informed them that she was not suicidal. The accident led to the closure of Edens for two hours; the investigators reopened it after collecting evidence and clearing the scene.

When an accident occurs, it triggers a fight or flight response on the part of the person who caused the accident. While some drivers stay at the scene and follow the provisions of the law, others flee the scene without rendering help, thereby committing a hit-and-run offense.

Illinois law provides that those involved in an accident should remain at the scene, and if there’s no death or injury, exchange contact and insurance information. Failure to do so is a Class A misdemeanor punishable with a fine of $2,500, and a revoked license if there’s property damage over $1,000.

When there’s personal injury or death, it is a Class 4 Felony punishable with one to three years prison sentence and $25,000 fine. When it is a Class 3 felony, it is punishable with five years imprisonment and a fine of $25,000.
