Joyce Brown Hit by Tractor-Trailer on Interstate 10 in Colorado County

An elderly Alleyton woman died in a vehicle-pedestrian accident near Columbus in Colorado County on Friday.  According to accident reports, she is 75-year-old Joyce Brown.

The accident occurred around 4:25 a.m.

According to the Texas Department of Public Safety, Brown walked into the westbound lanes of Interstate 10 and a Freightliner X12 tractor-trailer hit her.

The driver of that vehicle was 47-year-old Harold Johnson of Humble. Officials did not say whether he suffered any injuries. It is also not clear whether police will charge or cite him.

Brown was declared dead at the scene by Judge Francis Truchard, a Justice of the Peace.

No further details were made available, but the Texas DPS will continue investigations into the crash.

Thousands of people are injured or killed in Texas every year and even more lose their lives across the country.

According to a preliminary report from the Governors Highway Safety Association, 6,590 pedestrians died in the United States in 2019. This was the highest number of pedestrian fatalities in more than 30 years.

Pedestrians were expected to account for 17 percent of all traffic deaths in 2019, an increase of five percentage points in comparison to 2009.

Even as pedestrian deaths have increased significantly, other traffic deaths have increased by just two percent.

Improvements have been made in vehicle safety and technology and people in vehicles are more likely to survive. However, pedestrians have nothing to protect them and they remain vulnerable to motor vehicle accidents.

As accident reports show, they are more likely to sustain serious or even or fatal injuries.
