A crash in East Texas took the lives of a Shreveport Nurse, Melanie Coffman, 48, and her boyfriend, Richard Phillips, 54, on May 1. According to accident reports, Melanie died at the scene of the crash, while Phillips died in the hospital.
Family members of Coffman said that she was a nurse at Overton Brooks VA Medical Center, and also a sexual assault nurse examiner at the Caddo Parish Coroner’s Office.
From investigations already carried out, it was discovered that a 2016 Ford F-150 pickup was heading north on FM-9. The driver of the pickup was identified as Jeffery Mac Martin, 52, from Waskom. There was also a passenger in the vehicle identified as Lonnie Martin, aged 53.
Coffman and Phillips were also traveling east on FM-1999, on a 2009 Harley Davidson Motorbike driven by the latter, with Coffman being the passenger.
Suddenly, Martin entered the roadway without yielding the right of way, causing his vehicle to hit the motorcycle, ejecting Coffman and Phillips. An oncoming car, a 2016 Honda Civic, driven by Hannah Marter, 21, was also traveling west on FM-1999. The Honda Civic also hit Coffman and Phillips.
Medics and responding officers arrived at the scene and found the victims. Coffman was pronounced dead at the scene and taken to Meadowbrook Funeral Home in Marshall. Medics also rushed Phillips to Ochsner LSU Health in Shreveport but he died later as a result of his injuries.
Accident reports state that the driver of the Ford pickup and his passenger were treated at the scene of the accident and later released, while the Honda Civic driver wasn’t hurt at all.
Investigations into the crash remain ongoing.
