Motorcycle Crash Causes Death of Bruce Craig Crockett

Officials from the Department of Public Safety say a Jacksonville man died in a motorcycle accident on Thursday afternoon. According to their accident reports, he was traveling at an unsafe speed.

Fifty-seven-year-old Bruce Craig Crockett was riding his bike on FM 347 when the crash occurred around 3:45 p.m.

The authorities say Crockett rounded a corner at an unsafe speed and the motorcycle crossed the center line. It veered into the southbound lane and struck a Ford F-150 driven by 66-year-old Juan Lopez Ramirez of Jacksonville.

Crockett was declared dead at the accident scene. Officials didn’t say whether he was wearing a helmet or not. Ramirez did not suffer any injuries.

Investigations into the accident are ongoing. Additional accident reports could come at a later date.

On average, ten people die in motor vehicle accidents in Texas every day. About 14 percent of the victims are motorcyclists. More than 400 motorcyclists died in Texas every year from 2009 to 2018.

There were 416 fatalities in 2018 and this was the lowest number of motorcycle deaths over the ten year- period. Of these victims, 205 were helmeted while 194 were not wearing helmets. In 17 cases, it was not known whether the motorcyclist was wearing a helmet or not.

Under Texas laws, all motorcycle riders under the age of 21 years must wear a helmet. However, those over 21, don’t have to wear a helmet under certain circumstances. They must either complete a motorcycle operator safety or training course or have a health insurance policy that covers them in the event of an accident.
