A 25-year-old pedestrian died on the spot after he was struck by a car in East El Paso over the Easter weekend, accident reports state.
El Paso police said Nathan Jaime was attempting to cross Gateway East Boulevard when the accident occurred around midnight on April 11.
The vehicle was a Cadillac CTS driven by 31-year-old Manuel Marquez.
The collision happened in the 7700 block of Gateway East Boulevard between Hunter Drive and McRae Boulevard.
Jaime lived nearby in the 7500 block of Gateway East.
Marquez stayed at the scene and cooperated with police who did not file any charges against him.
No further details were released about how the crash occurred. It is not known whether Jaime was on a crosswalk.
This was the 22nd traffic death of the year in El Paso. At the same time last year, there were 18. Pedestrian fatalities have been on the increase since 2008.
They have increased by over 40 percent and make up 16 percent of all road fatalities.
Experts attribute this is in part to increased distractions on the part of both pedestrians and motorists. Impairment by drugs or alcohol is also a factor. Both drivers and pedestrians can be intoxicated, as accident reports show.
In 2017, 5,977 pedestrians died in vehicular accidents in the United States. This means on average one person died every 88 minutes.
Meanwhile, 137,000 pedestrians suffered non-fatal injuries that required treatment in emergency rooms.
People on foot are 1.5 times more likely to be killed in a car crash than people in passenger vehicles.
