A recent report from federal investigators determined that the pilot of a plane that crashed in March 2019 in Harrison County, killing all four aboard, was not qualified to be flying the aircraft.
The National Transportation Safety Board this week released a report shedding more light on the fatal crash, which occurred late morning March 9, 2019, while en route from Lancaster Regional Airport to a Louisiana airfield.
William R. Kendrick, 51, of Huffman, was transporting his wife, Rebecca M. Kendrick, 51, daughter Kaycee A. Kendrick and her boyfriend, Coty R. Shrum, both of Farmer’s Branch, in the twin-engine Cessna, when he encountered severe weather and crashed, according to the Texas Department of Public Safety.
A witness near the crash site said rain was falling in “sheets” at the time, the NTSB report said. He heard a noise, which he initially thought to be weather-related.
“I didn’t really believe at the time it could have possibly been an aircraft,” the witness told investigators. “Thought maybe static electricity in the clouds, or maybe a small tornado attempting to form.”
Investigators said William Kendrick was certified to fly a single-engine plane. However, he had not had adequate experience in operating larger aircraft with two engines.
