Rachel Richie in Intensive Care, Struck by Driver Running Red Light

Rachel Richie, 19, of Midlothian, Texas, is still in intensive care after a collision with a driver who ran a red light on January 1, 2020.

The accident happened when the Blinn College student was home for the winter break. Rachel’s sister Olivia, 18, was driving a Jeep Wrangler, with a friend in the front seat and Rachel in the back seat. They were on their way to pick up food.

At about 7:00 p.m., they had stopped at the intersection of Walnut Grove and Highway 287, about to turn left. The light turned and Olivia paused to make sure it was safe to go ahead, and then began the turn onto 287.

But a Ford F-150 pickup blew through the red light at 53 miles an hour and t-boned the Jeep.

The crash trapped the girls inside the vehicle and responding officers called MEDVAC to extract them.

Rachel, unconscious, was rushed to Methodist Dallas Medical Center. She suffered a traumatic brain injury, spinal injuries, and multiple broken bones.

Rachel Richie’s family say the stretch of road where the wreck happened has been the site of several collisions. Police claim an overpass is planned, but the speed limit at that dangerous intersection stays at 55 mph.

The driver, who was clearly at fault, merely received a ticket for running a red light.

The family is selling t-shirts at local businesses to help pay Rachel’s medical bills. The shirts display a Rachel Richie-drawn graphic featuring a bible verse.

The family has also set up a GoFundMe campaign
