The Odessa Police Department’s Traffic Unit has charged a commercial truck driver following a March 19 fatal crash. It occurred on I-20. Fatal accidents often result in the victim’s loved ones needing advice from Texas auto accident attorneys.
Forty-two-year-old Ranjit Singh has been charged with aggravated assault with a deadly weapon and manslaughter. The offences stem from the death of Amber Sahagun and both are second-degree felonies.
According to the police, Singh had been driving for more than 16 hours without getting proper rest. Doing so is a violation of the Federal Hours of Service Regulation that govern commercial drivers.
United States Marshals found Singh in California and arrested him.
Police said their investigations are ongoing.
The crashed occurred around 4:08 p.m. and resulted in the death of 39-year-old Amber Sahagun of Decatur, Texas.
A black Dodge truck driven by 26-year-old Ricky Enriquez had stopped westbound on IH-20 because of roadworks.
Manuel Rodriguez, 40, was traveling in a white Jaguar directly behind the Dodge truck. Sahagun was his passenger.
An 18-wheeler driven by New York resident Ranjit Singh was traveling directly behind the Jaguar.
Investigations revealed that Singh didn’t control his speed. He crashed into the back of the Jaguar, causing it to hit the Dodge truck.
Sahagun was pronounced dead at the scene while Rodriguez suffered life-threatening injuries but survived.
Even though Singh is facing criminal charges, auto accident attorneys may be able to help Sahagun’s survivors get compensation for their losses. Civil claims are completely separate from criminal proceedings.
