A beloved baseball coach reportedly died in a single-car crash on Thursday night.
According to accident reports, 31-year-old Cameron Bankston died in Huckabay, Texas while he was visiting friends.
Axtell Independent School District Superintendent Dr. JR Proctor announced Bankston’s passing in a Facebook post on Friday.
No further information was provided about how the accident occurred or if anyone else was injured.
Students and baseball players congregated on the Axtell baseball field on Saturday to pay tribute to Bankston.
The season has been suspended because of the coronavirus. Players gathered around their vehicles and talked about how the head coach impacted their lives.
A memorial started to form, and some individuals left flowers and notes.
Proctor said Bankston had been with Axtell for just a year, but he made a significant impact on the school.
He said Axtell ISD’s counselor Ashley Hardin would provide virtual counseling services for students who were affected by the coach’s death.
Bankston grew up in Burleson and played all-district and all-county baseball there. He later went on to play at Abilene Christian University before becoming a coach. From 2015 to 2018, he served as the head baseball coach at Hamilton High School.
Axtell had a 4-5 record in the 2020 season and a 2-0 district record before play was suspended and later canceled for spring.
In an April 17 Facebook post, Bankston thanked his players, especially the seniors, for their work.
If there are official accident reports about how the coach met his death, updated information will be provided.
