A seven-year-old boy was killed in a hit-and-run accident while trying to cross the street near his southwest Fort Worth home on Tuesday night.
The incident occurred around 10 p.m. near Highway 287 south of Berry Street.
Police said the driver dragged Nelson Morales for several blocks and then drove off. The boy was attending a family event when the accident took place.
Morales’ older brother said the family had gathered at a relative’s house because of their grandmother’s recent death. Morales was playing outside with his cousins.
Christian Rivas said the group was about to call it a night when one of his younger cousins yelled that Morales had just gotten run over.
Police revealed that the boy was among several youngsters who were trying to cross the street at Wichita Street and Comanche.
Officers said the kids waited for a southbound vehicle to pass and the driver of that vehicle slowed to make a left turn once through the crosswalk.
Investigators said the children then started to cross, and an SUV traveling in the other direction struck Nelson Morales and kept going.
Jazmen Craddock who was driving the vehicle that made the left turn said the impact was unnerving.
Meanwhile, Rivas said he understood that what happened was an accident, but he couldn’t believe the driver didn’t stop and try to help.
The other children and a neighbor who saw the crash were able to provide the police with information.
Police said the suspect’s vehicle was a gray or silver Toyota SUV. They are hoping to get surveillance video from homes and businesses in the area.
