Troopers: Jordan Shisler, Jasmin Cavazos Killed In Wreck Near Center

Authorities said two people were killed early Saturday morning when a vehicle swerved into the path of an oncoming semi in Shelby County.

Jordan Shisler, 28, of Center, and his passenger, Jasmin Cavazos, 20, also of Center, died from injuries sustained in the wreck, which occurred at about 2:20 a.m. Saturday on U.S. 96, investigators said later that afternoon. Another person was taken to a nearby hospital for treatment of possible injuries.

According to the Texas Department of Public Safety, Shisler was driving south on U.S. 96 a few miles outside of center when he crossed the highway’s centerline. Shisler’s vehicle then was struck on the passenger side by a semi-tractor trailer driven by Jasper Houston, 30, of Frierson, La., troopers said.

Emergency responders were called to the scene, but both Shisler and Cavazos were pronounced dead before they could be transported to a hospital for treatment, according to authorities. They said Houston was taken to an area hospital for treatment of possible injuries.

Authorities said they don’t know why Shisler’s vehicle crossed the centerline. They did not say whether factors such as speed or intoxication are believed to have contributed to the incident.

The crash remains under investigation by the Texas Department of Public Safety.
