Deputy Hit, Killed by Prison Bus

Alameda County Sheriff’s Deputy Michael Foley, 60, was killed Wednesday morning after he was hit by an inmate bus.

The accident occurred in the transportation yard of the Santa Rita Jail in Dublin, at approximately 6 a.m. The bus, driven by another sheriff’s deputy, collided with Foley at about 15 miles per hour.

The bus was designed to hold prison inmates, but was empty at the time of the collision, except for the sheriff’s deputy driving and another sheriff’s deputy who was a passenger.

Foley suffered severe injuries, including head trauma, and was taken to the John Muir Medical Center in Walnut Creek, where he died one day later.

The collision is still under investigation. The driver of the bus is believed to have not seen Foley, as the yard was dark at the time. He and the other deputy aboard were uninjured but shocked by the incident.
