Wrong-Way Driver Injures Children, Woman on 605 Freeway in Irwindale

Three children and one woman were among those hospitalized with injuries, when a wrong-way driver plowed into their vehicle on the 605 Freeway in Irwindale, CA, on the night of March 3, 2015. Witnesses reported that a Honda was seen traveling south in the northbound lanes of the freeway for roughly three minutes, striking the victims’ automobile in a crash that blocked three lanes of traffic for hours afterward. Originally reporting the matter as a multi-vehicle car accident, officers later confirmed that the Honda hit another car before entering the freeway, then hit the victims’ vehicle. The crash causing the injuries occurred around 8:45 p.m, near Lower Azusa Road.

HOSPITALIZED WITH INJURIES

The injured woman and one of the child accident victims were transported to Los Angeles County-USC Medical Center, while the other two injured children were taken to other hospitals, according to one of the first responders at the accident scene. The severity of their injuries was unknown, and it is unclear whether the Honda driver was also hospitalized.

CAUSE OF THE ACCIDENT

At press time, no reports were available to explain what caused the Honda driver to get on the freeway going the wrong direction. The fact that the Honda struck another car before entering the freeway may mean that this was a DUI driver accident, a failure of the driver to take reasonable care for the safety of others on the roadway, and the law is likely to hold both this driver and his motor vehicle insurance company liable for monetary damages to compensate for the injuries caused by his careless driving.
