In an area of West Hills notorious for reckless driving, two vehicles collided Sunday night leaving two 21-year-old men dead in a violent crash.
The accident happened on Vanowen Street, and the 21-year-olds were speeding in a 2001 BMW 530i around 6pm when their car clipped a 2014 Toyota Camry trying to make a left turn south onto Platt Avenue.
Shortly after the speeding BMW clipped the Camry, the BMW driver lost control of the vehicle. The car hit a fire hydrant and then a metal pole holding a traffic light and came to a violent end.
Los Angeles Police Department Detective William Bustos said “The BMW was completely destroyed. It separated into two pieces. The main part where the people were separated from the engine compartment, which ended up 12 to 20 yards from where the main part was.”
According to Coroner’s Assistant Chief Ed Winter, the men who were pronounced dead at the scene have now been identified as Angel Arroyos and his passenger Erik Garcia, both from the Winnetka area.
The 44-year-old female driver of the Toyota Camry was taken to a hospital and treated for minor injuries.
The accident occurred in an area where the posted speed limit is 35 mph and is the second crash this month where a car was destroyed in an accident involving excessive speed.
