At least two people were killed Sunday in the eastern San Francisco Bay Area cities of Oakland and Fremont, on freeways made dangerous by heavy rains.
The first of these crashes occurred in Oakland, California, at Doolittle Drive and Langley Street near the Oakland International Airport at around 8:30 a.m. Taxicab driver Jarnail Singh, 57, of San Leandro, California, was found dead in his cab, which had fallen into the nearby estuary. There were no passengers in the cab.
Although the cause of the crash is not known, weather is believed to be a factor. Large sections of the Bay Area were hit by heavy rains on Sunday, and several roads were closed because of flooding.
The second fatal accident in the Bay Area on Sunday occurred at around 7:10 a.m., on Interstate 880 in Fremont close to the Mason Boulevard exit. The victim has been identified as Karlos de la Torre, a Fremont native.
Authorities are still unsure what caused de la Torre’s crash, but his car is reported to have caught fire during the crash. There were no other cars involved, and no one else is reported to have been injured.
