Two women were killed on Saturday when their van fell off of the Barham Boulevard overpass onto the 101 Freeway in Los Angeles.
The crash, which occurred at around 7:20 p.m., has also left two men in critical condition.
The causes of the accident remain unclear. The van is believed to have breached a barrier on the overpass before being launched over northbound lanes of the 101 and onto the center median, hitting a southbound vehicle.
It is believed that speed may have been a factor, and that the van was trying to turn right onto a street parallel to the 101 freeway when it lost control.
The two deceased women, ages 50 and 60, were passengers in the vehicle that fell off of the bridge. The driver, a 60-year-old male, was among those critically injured, as was the driver of the second vehicle struck, a 48-year-old male. At least one of the victims was trapped inside the vehicle and had to be extricated by authorities.
A third car was also involved, but it suffered only minor damage and no injuries.
The accident caused major traffic congestion, and all southbound lanes of the 101 were closed for over an hour.
