Craig L. Boone

Zachary Morgan, 26, of Gladwin and Timothy LaPointe, 20, a Central Michigan University from Ypsilanti both died on January 6, 2020 as the result of a head-on crash in Gratiot County’s County’s Pine River Township.

The accident occurred around 10:46 a.m. on Monday, on US-127.

LaPointe was driving southbound. He crossed the median and collided head-on with a pickup in the northbound lane driven by Morgan.

LaPointe died at the scene. An ambulance transported Morgan to MidMichigan Medical Center in Gratiot. He later died as a result of his injuries.

LaPointe’s speed may have been a contributing factor to the head-on crash. Both men had been wearing seat belts, and officials do not believe either was under the influence.

Morgan was a Marine Corps veteran and general foreman at Asplundh Tree Experts, LLC. Originally from Whittemore, he graduated as class president there in 2011. He had a twin sister, Chelsea. The U.S. Marine Corps is preparing for Morgan’s burial.

LaPointe was a CMU Junior, majoring in marketing. He enrolled at CMU in 2017 after graduating from Arbor Preparatory High School.

The accident is still under investigation.
