Charges Could Finally Be Laid in Connection with the Death of Eric Keais

There has been swift reaction to an 11Alive The Reveal investigation into a deadly Georgia crash that occurred on September 11, 2019.

On Monday, Polk County District Attorney Jack Browning said he felt he need to release more information about the case following the report.

Thirty-eight-year-old Eric Keais was riding down Cedartown’s North Main Street when he was hit by a motorist around 8:25 p.m.

That motorist, later identified as Ralph “Ryan” Dover III, 37, kept driving. Instead of calling for the emergency services, he contacted Georgia Representative Trey Kelley.

According to the new report, Kelley passed the message on to Cedartown top cop Jamie Newsome at home.

No one called 911. Keais remained in a ditch for an hour before a police sergeant discovered him and he died in a hospital around 45 minutes later.

Five months after the crash, no charges were filed.

However, in response to the latest findings, Browning said the investigation was lengthy like many other probes into fatalities. He said numerous witnesses were involved and evidence had to be gathered from several entities.

He further revealed that he planned to take the case to the Grand Jury in a few weeks.

However, Min Koo, the attorney for the victim’s family says that’s not what the DA told her a week ago.

She said Browning indicated that he had the files for some time but had no timeline for action. Koo said after she pressed him, he said he hoped to have a result by summer.

Browning told The Reveal he spoke to the attorney, but he didn’t remember giving her that timeline. He declined to say whether Kelley or Newsome would face charges.

Georgia Representative Renitta Shannon called for Kelley’s resignation.
