Last Thursday, 43-year-old Thomas Chauvel, of Newport Beach, California, was killed in an auto-pedestrian accident. The accident occurred in Park City, Utah, and the PCPD has identified the driver as a 23-year-old male.
The PCPD has not released the name of the suspect even though they have him in custody. The police arrested the young man for failing to remain at the scene of the accident and charged him with a third-degree felony.
On the unfortunate day when Chauvel lost his life, he was taking a walk on Empire Avenue close to Park City Mountain Resort. He was walking on the east side of the road when a van heading north hit him.
The deceased was taken to the University of Utah Teaching Hospital. He died there from the injuries sustained from the hit.
An affidavit filed in the third district court showed that Chauvel was bleeding in the mouth after the man hit him. When police arrived, they got the license plate number of the van from one of the eyewitnesses.
The information helped them in tracking down the suspect. The PCPD took him into custody, and the young man stated during questioning that he fled because he was in disarray after the accident.
The accident is the third to happen in Park City in the space of two weeks. The PCPD has advised pedestrians and bicycle cyclists to use the alternative routes available to them to prevent more deaths.
Under Utah law, the suspect faces two to ten years prison sentence if found guilty. He will also pay a fine of $10 000.
