A Tucson, Arizona driver has passed away as a result of injuries sustained in a vehicle crash on January 12 at the intersection of Kolb Road and 22nd Street.
The medical examiner’s office in Pima County updated the Tucson Police Department after 69-year-old minivan driver Antonio Calva died on Saturday.
Back in January, Operations Divisions East police and medics from Tucson Fire responded to a report of a serious-injury collision around 11 a.m.
Eyewitnesses at the intersection reported seeing a black 2000 Toyota minivan heading east on 22nd Street. It went into the left turn lane and then into the intersection to go onto Kolb Road.
As the van driven by Calva started to turn left, a white Toyota Camry that was heading west on 22nd Street drove into the intersection. The two vehicles collided.
The driver of the Camry remained on scene and cooperated with officers. They determined that he was not impaired at the time of the accident. However, they said speed appeared to be a factor.
The driver, who was not named, was cited at the scene for speeding.
He was taken to St Joseph’s Hospital and his injuries were not considered life-threatening.
The Tucson Police Department Traffic Investigations Unit will continue to probe what is now a fatal accident.
In 2018, 1,010 people were killed in 916 fatal crashes in Arizona. This number of deaths was the highest since 2007 when 1,071 people lost their lives in 952 fatal crashes. In 2017, 998 people died in motor vehicle accidents compared to 952 in 2016.
