Search for 77-Year-Old Karen Strong Ends After Vehicle Plunges into Pond

An elderly woman who was the subject of a Silver Alert was found on Tuesday when she lost control of her vehicle and plunged into a shallow community pond in Surprise, Arizona.

A Silver Alert had been issued for 77-year-old Karen Strong late on Monday night.

She was last seen that afternoon in Sun City West when she was heading to the Solstice Senior Living Facility.

Strong was following her son to the facility. However, she reportedly continued heading west on Camino Del Sol when her son pulled into the facility’s parking lot on Spanish Garden Drive.

She was found on Bell Road, west of Bullard Avenue.

Lt. Tim Klarkowski of the Surprise Police Department said her black Ford Flex was partially submerged in the water. Aerial video showed the SUV with water over its hood and reaching the level of the windshield. The rear bumper was on the edge.

Klarkowski said Strong managed to get out of the vehicle on her own before police and paramedics arrived. She didn’t appear to have serious injuries, but she was taken to the hospital as a precaution.

Investigators are now trying to determine what caused Strong to veer off the road and into the pond. There are no details about where the elderly woman had been between the time she was reported missing and when the accident occurred.

In Arizona, a Silver Alert is issued when a person with specified cognitive or developmental disabilities, or a person age 65 or older goes missing.
