The Georgia State Patrol (“GSP”) has identified the person killed on Friday in a Cobb County interstate crash as longtime Atlanta judge Municipal Court judge Elaine Carlisle. Carlisle had retired just a few years ago.
According to the GSP, preliminary findings suggest that on February 21 around 12 p.m., state troopers responded to reports of an accident on I-75 South near Cumberland Boulevard in Cobb County. A silver Mercedes C300 failed to stay in its lane as it traveled south on the entrance ramp to I-75 South. The GSP said the vehicle then veered off the road via the left shoulder lane, crossed a grass median and traveled into oncoming traffic.
The driver’s side of the Mercedes was then hit by an oncoming Chevrolet Express van that was heading south in the far-right lane.
According to reports, the Mercedes then traveled across all southbound lanes and struck a concrete wall. The driver, who troopers reported was not wearing a seatbelt at the time of the crash, was later identified as 65-year-old retired Atlanta Municipal Court Judge Elaine Carlisle.
Carlisle was taken to Kennestone Hospital for an apparent head injury but later died.
The other driver complained of chest pains from the airbag deployment and was also treated at Kennestone Hospital.
Troopers are still investigating details of the crash and why Carlisle lost control of her vehicle.
