Ivan Cobos Killed, 3 Passengers Injured After Car Slams into Palm Tree

The Savannah Police Department’s Traffic Investigation Unit is investigating a single-vehicle crash that occurred early Sunday morning February 23 on Victory Drive and Ash Street. The driver of the vehicle, who died after the crash, has been identified as 20-year-old Ivan Cobos. Three passengers were in the vehicle. All three were also injured in the collision.

According to Savannah police, at approximately 2:40 a.m., Cobos’ Honda Civic crashed into a palm tree. Police reported that a preliminary investigation revealed that Cobos was traveling eastbound on Victory Drive in a reckless manner. He was unable to maintain control of the vehicle, swerved into the median and struck a palm tree on Victory Drive.

Cobos, as well as his three passengers, were all transported to an area hospital with serious injuries. Cobos later died from his injuries. For reasons unknown at this time, the names of the passengers have not been released.

Police say none of the occupants of the vehicle were wearing a seat belt at the time of the crash.

Authorities continue to investigate the crash. All areas of distracted driving will be investigated. It has not yet been reported if this accident was a result of DUI. The Traffic Investigation Unit encourages motorists and passengers to always wear their seat belts.
