According to police, at approximately 4 p.m. on Friday February 21, they received reports of a two-vehicle accident at the intersection of Peachtree Industrial Boulevard and Shadburn Ferry Road in Gwinnett County.

James Monahan Jr., 26, of Ellabell was the driver of one of the vehicles involved. A driver and at least one passenger were traveling in the second vehicle involved in the crash. Those individuals were treated for minor injuries. For reasons unknown, their names have yet to be disclosed.

Monahan left the scene of the crash, where the injuries he sustained, if any, are unknown at this time. According to police, he was armed. As officers responding to the accident tried to catch up with him, he opened fire on them. He soon after hijacked another vehicle and drove it through Shoal Creek Park before driving the vehicle into Lake Lanier.

“Once he drove into the lake, the male began firing at police officers from the area of the sinking vehicle,” police reported in a statement on Friday. Police returned fire. Bullets struck the police car; however, no officers were injured.

Monahan’s body was pulled from Lake Lanier Friday night. The investigation is ongoing and now involves the Georgia Bureau of Investigation.

Ellabell is about 25 miles west of Savannah.
