The Tarrant County Medical Examiner’s Office has named the pedestrian who was killed on Friday afternoon in a crash caused by a suspected drunk driver.
He is 63-year-old Cornelius Davis of Fort Worth.
Authorities said Davis was pronounced dead at the accident scene in the 2300 block of South Riverside Drive. He was a short distance away from his home, according to the information published on the medical examiner’s website.
The driver, 23-year-old Abel Gonzales, was arrested shortly after the crash. Police charged him with intoxication manslaughter.
Gonzales was the only occupant of the car and he stayed at the scene after the accident.
Fort Worth police said Davis was one of two pedestrians who were hit by the vehicle. The other individual suffered injuries that were not life-threatening. The person’s name was not released.
Several parked vehicles were also hit during the crash that took place around 4:30 p.m.
Intoxication manslaughter is a second-degree felony in Texas. If Gonzalez gets convicted, he could face prison time of two to 20 years in prison. He could also have to pay a fine of up to $10,000.
In 2019, pedestrian deaths in the United States jumped to their highest levels in 30 years. This happened despite an overall drop in traffic fatalities.
Approximately 6, 590 pedestrians were killed in vehicular crashes last year. This represented an increase of five percent over the previous year. This is according to a report released on Thursday by the Governors Highway Safety Association.
