A 17-year-old died after a train struck his car in an accident in Bartow County on Wednesday.

Bartow County Coroner Joel Guyton identified the victim as Justin Garland of Adairsville. Garland was killed while trying to drive his vehicle across a railroad track.

The accident took place on Wednesday morning February 26 in Bartow County just off of Hall Station Road.

According to the Georgia State Patrol, Garland was driving a 1982 Chevrolet C20 onto a private drive when he crossed in front of a CSX freight train that was traveling north.

The conductor said he sounded his train horn to warn the driver. The train was unable to stop in time and struck the passenger-side door of Garland’s truck. For reasons unknown at this time, the identity of the conductor has yet to be released.

County Coroner Joel Guyton added that the Georgia State Patrol is handling the actual crash investigation, which is ongoing. All details, including weather and speed, will be investigated.

Guyton said that conditions in the area were foggy. According to information available, Guyton doesn’t believe there was a crossing arm in place where the tracks crossed the road.

Guyton’s family has since been notified of the deadly crash.
