Gregory Campbell Identified as Fatal Victim in I-57 Accident

In an incident that took place on the Interstate 57 on Wednesday, February 27, the victim has now been identified by the police. According to the details shared by the Illinois State Police, the victim was Gregory Campbell, 52, of Chicago Heights.

The incident took place while Campbell and another individual were helping in putting gas into the stalled vehicle of another driver. Both individuals were busy in this attempt on the right shoulder of the I-57. It was then that another vehicle crashed into them.

The other vehicle, which was a white Acura car, was being driven by a Richton Park woman whose identity has not been released by the authorities. The Acura driver was driving in the same lane as the Pontiac when traffic in front of her came to a sudden halt. The Acura driver veered to the right in an attempt to avoid hitting the vehicles in front of her. This is when the Acura hit the Pontiac and the two persons busy trying to put gas into it, including Gregory Campbell.

The accident took place in the morning rush hour at about 7:05 a.m. Campbell sustained critical injuries and the other person accompanying him was also seriously injured. Both were rushed to the hospital where Campbell was later pronounced dead. The other person remains under treatment at the hospital.

The Pontiac driver and the driver of the Acura remained safe and didn’t incur any notable injuries in the crash. Traffic in the northbound lane was closed for nearly three hours following the crash. Illinois State Police and other agencies continue to investigate the incident.
