Many pedestrian accidents can be avoided by learning how to cross a road safely.

First, choose the right spot. The ideal location is a zebra crossing or where a police officer or traffic warden is stationed. Always select a place that gives you a full view of both directions of the road. Avoid crossing at turns and bends.

Watch and listen out for vehicular movement. Do not be in a hurry and keep your eyes on the road at all times. If you are distracted, ask someone to help you get across the street.

Never run across the road. If you are on a zebra crossing, wait for the green light to come on. If you are beside a traffic warden, wait for the officers go-ahead before you cross the road. If you are on your own, wait till you have a clear sight of the other side before you go across.

Remember to always be on the lookout for vehicular movement until you have safely crossed the road.
