Georgia Bureau of Investigation Release Cause of Death of Hit-and-Run Driver, John Monahan

Last month, in Gwinnett County, Georgia, a hit-and-run driver, John Monahan, 26, opened fire at the police before crashing his car into a lake. On Monday, March 2nd, the Georgia Bureau of Investigation released the cause of death.

The GBI in a press release, stated that the accident victim did not die from his car submerging into water. Monahan died from a gunshot wound inflicted on himself after exchanging fire with the police.

Based on the preliminary report by the Gwinnett County Police Department, the young man, was involved in a hit-and-run accident along Peachtree Industrial Boulevard. An eye witness, Andy Adams, who was on the road on his way to North Carolina, said Monahan flew by him driving at about 100 mph.

The excessive speed caused the deceased to hit other vehicles on the roadway without stopping. The GCPD chased Monahan, and after a while, he stepped out from his car, opened fire on the police officers with a shotgun, and carjacked another vehicle in which he drove away.

The police chased him again, and when the driver got to Shoal Creek Park, he drove his car off the road into Lake Liner. As the vehicle went underwater, Monahan exchanged fire with the police until his car disappeared from view.

Divers from the GCPD went after the deceased almost immediately and recovered his body. The police have not uncovered what caused Monahan to act the way he did, and the investigation is ongoing.

A hit-and-run is a severe traffic offence in Georgia. Had the driver lived, he would have faced not less than four years in jail, a fine, and the suspension of his driving privileges.
