A two-vehicle wreck in Liberty County, Hinesville, Georgia, in the early hours of Thursday, March 5th, ended the life of a Savannah native. The Georgia State Police identified the person as Joseph Leon Kerr, 62.
Kerr was traveling on Interstate 95 when a tractor-trailer hit his car. GSP trooper, David Laff, said the deceased was heading south of Exit 76 in Midway when he started having trouble with his 2002 Toyota Corolla.
Kerr pulled the car into the grassy shoulder asphalt around 6:55 a.m. and sat inside while he waited for a tow truck to come to recover his vehicle. While the deceased waited, an unidentified tractor-trailer driver, who decided to take a 30 minutes break, pulled into the shoulder of the interstate.
As the driver was pulling over, the front passenger side of the trailer struck Kerr’s car. The impact left the deceased with severe injuries, and paramedics, who responded to a 911 call, took him to the Memorial Health University Medical Center in Savannah, where he passed away.
The trailer driver went unscathed. The GSP Specialized Reconstruction Team took over the investigation of the accident scene, and they will bring a criminal charge against the trailer driver if they find evidence of negligence or impairment.
Negligence and impairment are the two things law enforcement officers, the courts and individuals lookout for to bring a charge or a civil lawsuit against an offending driver. When the two are present, the court will hand over a sentence or award damages as the case may be.
