A fatal two-vehicle crash in Atlanta, Georgia, claimed the lives of five victims, leaving two others hospitalized with life-threatening injuries on Wednesday, March 11.
The incident took place on Bolton Road, in northwest Atlanta, after a Nissan Sentra lost control and collided with a MARTA bus near Donald Lee Hollowell Parkway.
According to the Atlanta Police Department, the accident was reported at about 10:45 pm, and left at least seven casualties in its wake.
Investigators determined that the unfortunate incident began when the driver of a Sedan transporting seven occupants, including a pregnant woman and two toddlers, suddenly lost control and crossed the dividing lane into the opposite-bound traffic. The malfunctioning vehicle then collided head-on with an oncoming MARTA bus which had three occupants.
Emergency responders tried to rescue the passengers in the wrecked car but were able to save only the 28-year-old driver and a 12-year-old. The other occupants of the vehicle did not survive the deadly crash. The two passengers present in the bus were unharmed, while the driver sustained minor injuries.
Following the fatal wreck, another vehicle struck the Nissan Sentra from behind, but none of its occupants was harmed in the collision.
The deceased passengers include a 19-month-old tot, a 4-year-old, a teenager, and two women. One of the women, who was reportedly pregnant prior to the accident, was identified as Kareema Floyd.
The injured victims were transported to Grady Memorial Hospital, where they remain in critical condition.
